William Penn's treaty with the Indians is a famous document, worth reading in these times when international treaties bulk so largely in the day's news.

One paragraph lays down a sound and permanent principle, which deserves to be memorized by every diplomat. It was written nearly two hundred and fifty years ago—in 1682, to be exact. ... Said Penn to the Indians: "We are met on the broad pathway of good faith and good will, so that no advantage is to be taken on either side; but all to be openness, brotherhood, and love."
