[Written Especially for Young People]

"Harmless as doves"

When Jesus was about to send his disciples out into the world equipped with nothing tangible to the material senses as a means of defense against the onslaughts of error, which he well knew would be forthcoming against any emissary of Truth, he gently warned them to be "wise as serpents, and harmless as doves."

In the Glossary of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 584) Mrs. Eddy gives the spiritual interpretation of the word "dove" in part as follows: "Purity and peace; hope and faith;" and on page 515 she says, "The serpent of God's creating is neither subtle nor poisonous, but is a wise idea, charming in its adroitness."

As the thought of youth expands from the playtime of childhood to the wider field of school and college, this loving advice of the Master, with our dear Leader's scientific definitions in mind, may well be heeded. Wise, and harmless! How these words supplement each other! Wisdom or understanding alone, without harmless, compassionate love, is not enough; and harmless innocence needs the strengthening support of understanding.
