About fourteen years ago, when in front of the home of some people whom I knew to be Christian Scientists, I thought how wonderful it must be, when sick, not to have to send for a doctor, not to be afraid that you will die. Six months later I was put to the test. My little girl came home from school sick, and I sent for a doctor. He told me she had influenza. The next day he said she had pneumonia; the third day, double pneumonia. He also told me there was one chance in a million that she would recover. She could not swallow anything, and the medicine had to be injected. The minister of the church she used to attend came to visit her, and as he came down stairs I heard him say to his wife that he saw no hope for my little girl; that he expected me to get another blow like one I had had six months before, when I had lost a loved one.
This "extremity" was "God's opportunity." A brother in Cleveland had talked to me about Christian Science some years before. I had told him that my church was good enough for me; but when all material aid failed to heal my daughter, I telegraphed to him. My telegram read, "Marjorie is at death's door, and Christian Scientists know how to pray." This was on a Friday. The next day I got an answer from him: "Your prayer was answered. Marjorie will live." Sunday morning the doctor passed the house, expecting to see a crêpe on the door, but when he did not see it he came in. He went into the sick room, looked at my daughter, and noting the marked improvement in her condition, turned to me and said, "Well, well, how did it happen?" Double pneumonia, influenza, and goiter had disappeared overnight. I explained, "The great Doctor above you and me healed my little girl."
To say that I am grateful for Christian Science is very inadequate. My sincere desire is that I may live this beautiful truth daily and be worthy of the title "Christian Scientist"; that I may let my light so shine that men may see my good works and glorify my Father which is in heaven. Since this healing, Christian Science has been our only physician. My two children and I have experienced innumerable blessings. I am grateful for the Wednesday evening testimony meetings, for the periodicals, for the privilege of being a member of The Mother Church and a branch church, and for class instruction.
