Extracts from Reports of Christian Science Committees on Publication

New Zealand.

The following particulars will be of interest with reference to the administration of the Christian Science Earthquake Relief Fund. The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, sent a cable a day or two after the disaster in Hawkes Bay inquiring if help were needed. Upon receiving a reply in the affirmative they cabled a sum of money to a bank in Wellington, which formed the nucleus of a relief fund, to which churches and societies and private individuals contributed. This fund was for the relief of students of Christian Science, and for worthy non-Scientists. After this fund was formed it was thought advisable that a visit by your Committee should be paid to the scene of the disaster, to see what the conditions were, and also to find the best way to assist.

At first, help was poured in to the stricken area from all over the country. Food, clothes, and other necessities were to be had in abundance. Many visits were paid to the homes of students of Christian Science, and it was agreed that except in a few cases where urgent help was needed, it would be best to hold our hand until things began to settle down and life became more normal. Later events proved this to be the wisest course; for after a month or two many appeals were made for help, all the other channels of supply having ceased to operate. When Christian Science students learned that a special fund had been inaugurated by The Mother Church, and contributed to by churches and societies in New Zealand and Australia, it was yet another proof to them of divine Love's care and protection; while to those who were not quite sure of the way in Christian Science, it has done much to prove to them that God is "a very present help in trouble."
