When Christian Science was brought to my attention,...

When Christian Science was brought to my attention, I was fully convinced that I had contracted tuberculosis from a loved one whom I had taken care of for several years. No physician's aid was sought, as I had lost my faith in serums and rest cures, and my only hope was that I might keep my strength as long as this loved one needed my help, and then I would be willing to let the disease take its course.

Gradually this morose thinking was broken down as I studied the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, together with the Bible. The physical symptoms were alleviated, but the cough hung on. After the passing on of this loved one, the symptoms were again aggravated, and it was the expectancy of many of my friends that I should follow.

But then I turned to the above-named books unreservedly, giving much of my time to their study. The sense of grief, which seemed overwhelming at first, was lifted, and I often marveled at the peace which came to me as I pondered the truth set forth in these books and would say it was "the peace ... which passeth all understanding." For it, indeed, passed my understanding as to how peace could come to me as I read, when at other times all was turmoil and a sense of loss.
