In the sixty-first chapter of Isaiah we read of the blessings...

In the sixty-first chapter of Isaiah we read of the blessings which are to follow the coming of the Christ, one of which is expressed in these words: "To give unto them beauty for ashes." This promise has been fulfilled for me since I learned something of the true meaning of "Christ" as defined in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy (p. 583).

As a student of art I spent many dissatisfied years searching for beauty and perfection in material forms, but gradually the conviction came to me that there was something behind what I was trying to express that was only hinted at in the medium through which I was looking for it. I now understand that step by step I was being led to see that the origin of all perfection and fitness is in God; but I did not awaken to this truth for many years, for I had given up all thought of religion and never read the Bible. However, I began to attend a Christian Science church, more out of curiosity than anything else, and purchased a copy of the textbook. Gradually I found that I was becoming mildly interested in the subject, but I did not wake up to its real significance until a crisis occurred in my life just before our second child was born, when I was faced with the necessity of an operation. Being filled with fear and self-pity at the prospect, I decided to ask a Christian Science practitioner to help me. I shall never forget the peace and joy that descended on our troubled household after the first treatment; there was no need for a second one, for the next morning the little girl was born under perfectly normal conditions.

This healing convinced me that Christian Science alone could satisfy me, and since that day I have tried to assimilate and put into practice the truth about God and man as revealed to us by our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, and in doing this I have learned to love the Bible in a way that I never thought possible before. In the years that have followed that first healing, progress has often seemed to be very slow, yet I can say with a grateful heart, Thank God for Christian Science, which has given me at last a reasonable, satisfying explanation of Him as the perfect, immutable cause of all that really is. I am grateful, too, for the many healings my children and I have had through Christian Science treatment. Although my husband is a doctor, they have never taken medicine and have been allowed to attend the Christian Science Sunday School.
