Morpeth Herald
Kindly allow me to comment upon the report, in the Morpeth Herald of the 22d inst., of a sermon on Christian Science. The Christian Science church is not "in antagonism to the Christian church," as suggested by the preacher. It is engaged in carrying out in full the command of Christ Jesus to preach the gospel and heal the sick, a command which was carried out by the early Christians for nearly three centuries after the Master's resurrection.
Christian Science teaches the allness of God, divine Mind, and the consequent nothingness or unreality of matter and evil. It also teaches that God reveals Himself through spiritual ideas alone. To the extent that we have in us that "mind ... which was also in Christ Jesus" the false mentality which attributes reality to matter and evil is eliminated; and since all the sin, sickness, and sorrow of the world is included in this false mentality—the carnal mind—this elimination brings healing, just as the coming of light dispels darkness. Your readers who care to look into this subject should read the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, which can be obtained at any Christian Science Reading Room or from the public libraries.
The preacher's accusation that the Lord's Prayer has been altered by Christian Science is unfounded. The Lord's Prayer, exactly as given in Matthew, is used at every Christian Science service. The spiritual sense of this prayer, as given on pages 16 and 17 of the Christian Science textbook by Mrs. Eddy, has brought hope and healing to unnumbered thousands. An unbiased thought would not see "arrogance and presumption" in this interpretation of the Lord's Prayer.
