As a Little Child

Jesus told his disciples that, if they would enter the kingdom of God, they must become childlike. The same word is for each of us today as much as for those to whom it was spoken. Thinking of this, and trying to realize something of what it means to be childlike, a student of Christian Science was reminded of a little scene she once witnessed. A mother had left her baby with a neighbor while she went on an errand. The baby was good and quiet, and did not seem discontented, but when the mother returned and stood before him, her face shining with mother-love, and took him in her arms, the little one laid his head on her breast with an expression of happy trustfulness and satisfaction, beautiful to see. There was no fear, hesitancy, or doubt, but a happy acceptance of the mother-love enfolding him.

On page 322 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," our dear Leader, Mrs. Eddy, tells us that "the sharp experiences of belief in the supposititious life of matter, as well as our disappointments and ceaseless woes, turn us like tired children to the arms of divine Love." And she adds the assurance, "Then we begin to learn Life in divine Science." Since our overcoming of unhappy conditions is made possible through the acceptance and understanding of this Love, trustfulness is one of the beautiful qualities we should cultivate.

How joyously a little child will go anywhere with his father! He is not concerned about any difficulties that may be encountered; he knows that his father will rightly meet them. He has no fear, no burdened sense of responsibility. His only thought is to keep with his father; and so he is free to enjoy all the interesting incidents along the way.
