"Follow me"

Jesus' words, "Follow me," spoken to Simon Peter and Andrew, and his similar call to James and John, strengthened their awakening recognition of the Christ, Truth, which he reflected; and they immediately gave up their business as fishermen and followed him. This was also true in the case of Matthew, whom Jesus met at the receipt of custom, and whom he hailed in a similar manner. He, too, left his business of customs collector and followed him. Well may we consider the nature of the Christ manifested by Jesus, which attracted these men, and which caused them to turn from their worldly interests, in order to become the Master's disciples.

Mrs. Eddy writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 332), "Christ is the true idea voicing good, the divine message from God to men speaking to the human consciousness." This "divine message from God," which reached the apostles and others through Jesus, still attracts and merits the instant recognition of all who are ready to receive it lovingly; for it presents the way out of sin, disease, and death. Today, through the Science of Christ, or Christian Science, we learn that God is perfect, and that He is divine Principle, the creator of harmony, not of discord. Recognition of the true nature of God and of Christ enables us to heal ourselves and others of the many discords which seem to be real to human sense; and it awakens in us, even as it did in the apostles, the desire to consecrate our thought and attention to the holy work of being and doing good. When we recognize and respond to this divine attraction, worldly interests, pleasures, and demands are seen as relatively insignificant, and we find ourselves turning unreservedly to the service of God and His Christ. As Jesus said. "My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me."

Jesus' work in healing the sick and reforming the sinner attracted attention to his teaching. How empty would his teaching have been had it not been accompanied by the demonstrations which must sooner or later have awakened in those healed, and in those who witnessed these healings, a recognition of the fact that here, indeed, was the Christ, the Saviour of mankind! Is it any wonder that many of these men and women followed Jesus, listening eagerly to every word of Truth he spoke, and watching everything he did, so that they might learn to emulate him?
