I was brought up in Christian Science and for several years was privileged to attend the Sunday school of The Mother Church. Throughout my childhood I saw many healings take place in our family, and I learned to trust God implicitly. The unflinching loyalty and courage which my mother showed during these years, at times under most unfavorable cîrcumstances, are a continual source of inspiration to me.
But in spite of this, somewhere between the period of childish faith and the development of adult understanding, I lost sight of the fact that it is necessary for each one of us to study and prove for himself the truth of being. Study of material subjects through high school and college seemed to absorb my thought and to contradict the spiritual facts I had learned. For several years, not being able to reconcile the material to the spiritual, I ceased to try, and the result was a state of mental confusion and idleness of thought which continued until I found myself face to face with a severe trial. Then I suddenly awoke to the fact that God is the only power and Spirit the only reality, and therefore, as Mrs. Eddy points out on page 19 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," "Truth and error are irreconcilable." All my doubts and wondering immediately vanished, and I found myself involuntarily turning to God with humility, and with enlightened thought putting so-called material laws and sciences in their correct classification. I am sincerely grateful for this great trial and the proof of God's allness, for without it I might still be drifting instead of progressing in the truth. I am most grateful to the loving practitioner through whose understanding the demonstration was made.
Since that time my greatest desire has been to study and grow in spiritual understanding, and I have had many proofs of God's care. One of my children has several times been protected from contagious diseases prevalent in school. The other child, who formerly was subject to attacks of bronchitis, has been free from them for about three years.
