From the Field

[From the Clerks of First and Second Churches of Christ, Scientist, Dayton, Ohio]

For a number of years services have been held each Sunday morning at the County Jail and City Workhouse, and by appointment at the Montgomery County Home. In beginning this work many obstacles were encountered—lack of interest, criticism, disturbances, and so forth. But by unfaltering faith in God and persistence in right thinking these obstacles have been overcome one by one until now the services are attended voluntarily and in an orderly manner.

A number of the prisoners earnestly study the Bible Lessons and take part in the services. The Bible and the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, have been placed in these institutions for the benefit of those interested and are being used constantly.

Many cases of healing, both physical and moral, have been reported, and those healed, as well as their families, have expressed much gratitude. One healing was that of an inmate of the City Workhouse. When admitted to the institution this individual was possessed with the belief that he could not remember. This error has been overcome to the extent that he has committed to memory all of Mrs. Eddy's hymns, as well as many passages from her writings. He has been healed of the tobacco habit after being an inveterate smoker. His changed attitude since becoming interested in Christian Science has resulted in his being granted special privileges and even being intrusted with certain responsibilities. This is another proof of the value of giving a cup of cold water in Christ's name.
