Comments by a well-known religionist, reported in your issue of January 13, may have given your readers misleading impressions regarding Mary Baker Eddy and Christian Science, and I should appreciate an opportunity to say something in defense of the facts.
The Bible indicates that Christ Jesus healed "all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people." In his healing ministry, the Master utilized effectually the power of God, Spirit, and permitted no limitations in the application and scope of his healing work. Furthermore, it is evident that he expected his followers to heal sickness and sin by spiritual means, for his final words to the eleven before the ascension, as cited in the last chapter of Mark's Gospel, included the commands and promises: "Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. ... And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover."
Obedient to Jesus' commands, the disciples joyously presented to mankind the good news of his teachings, and marvelous cures were effected. It is noteworthy that the healing of sickness, as well as of sin, continued in the primitive Christian church for about three centuries after the ascension. Finally, something over sixty years ago, Mrs. Eddy, deeply religious and a devoted follower of the Master, sought and discovered the Christianly scientific laws underlying Christ Jesus' healing method; and she presented her discovery to humanity so clearly that multitudes have been enabled to heal themselves and others by the same spiritual means Jesus employed. In other words, Christian Science is the Christian religion.
