Your issue of February 28 contains a statement by a doctor which needs correction. He evidently believes that the cases of healing brought about by Christian Science treatment are caused by suggestion. This is not the case.
A Christian Science practitioner recognizes an erroneous belief held by a patient, and his duty is to correct this erroneous belief by the truth of being which is revealed to him through spiritual understanding. Christ Jesus was the greatest exponent of Christian Science. He explained his method when he said, "If ye continue in my word, . . . ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." A close study of his recorded healings in the New Testament will certainly reveal that they were not performed through what is today known as suggestion.
One does not teach mathematics through suggestion. An understanding of the rules of mathematics is necessary to enable the pupil to bring out the right result. So it is with Christian Science. An understanding of the divine Principle and rules by which Christ Jesus healed the sick and reformed the sinner is necessary to bring about healing; and this understanding Christian Science gives.
