Extracts from Reports of Christian Science Committees on Publication

Montana.

Many editors rate highly The Christian Science Monitor. Three without solicitation have asked me to enter exchange subscriptions. Eight others when solicited accepted it. Newspapers have quite generously quoted it. The following editorial tribute by one who is not a Christian Scientist is worthy of quotation:

"One of the greatest newspapers of the many which come daily to our desk is The Christian Science Monitor. Although it is owned and published by a religious organization which gave it the name it carries, it is not, in a strict sense, a denominational publication. It tells each day the needs of the world and presents an exceptional editorial page. Usually but one column each day, never more than two, presents the lessons of that church. The really distinguishing feature of the paper is the news which it does not print. Nothing pertaining to crime, as it is carried on each day all over the world, is ever found in its pages. It ably discusses conditions which lead to criminality, but eschews accounts of murders, robberies, and other very prevalent forms of lawlessness. For that very reason it is always a source of much satisfaction to read through The Christian Science Monitor each day. An exceptional corps of writers tell fully and without color the daily happenings throughout the globe. Special articles dealing with varied matters of human interest are numerous in each issue. Always we are able to find something of an inspirational character. It may be a poem or some philosophical observations by a contributor. When we have finished reading the paper we have a feeling of satisfaction that the hour has been profitably and pleasantly spent. We might say in passing that our admiration for the paper does not arise from any affiliation with the church by which it is sponsored."
