When Christian Science was presented to me, I did not...
When Christian Science was presented to me, I did not want it, for I had heard and believed much that was said against it. I did not like to have my friend talking about it to me, so I asked her to leave me the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, saying, "If there is really anything good in it I shall certainly find it; but if it proves illogical, you must agree never to mention it to me again, as I shall have nothing to do with it."
The first chapter, on Prayer, pleased me and gave me a sense of peace and calm I had never had before. Each day I read a little more, as I wished to be honest and able to say that I had read in the book. At the expiration of a fortnight I realized that I was healed of chronic constipation which dated back more than fifteen years. This surprised me, and I began to think that Christian Science was the truth that makes free. I continued to read, as I wanted the peace it was giving me; and as this healing proved lasting, I decided to try Christian Science for the other ailments from which I was then suffering.
Three operations for internal troubles had proved of no avail, and I continued to suffer with a weak back, sick headaches of the severest kind, and chronic indigestion, together with a nervous temperament that made me almost impossible to live with. At this time my financial affairs were also very unsettled; in fact, my entire outlook for the future was beclouded.
