When I realize how much I owe to Christian Science and...
When I realize how much I owe to Christian Science and how much it has meant to me and to my family, I wonder that I have waited so long before expressing my gratitude. I did not come to Christian Science for physical healing, but because the teachings of an orthodox church had failed to give me any satisfactory explanation of God or any practical help for everyday living. I loved the simplicity of the Christian Science church service and accepted the teachings of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, unreservedly, but I never really gained any understanding of Christian Science until a severe problem and deep sorrow compelled me to turn to God as the only refuge and the only comforter.
For twenty-four years this beautiful truth has been our only help. There have been many problems solved, many healings, physical and moral, accomplished, and many much-needed lessons learned. An early experience that was a great encouragement was painless childbirth. No one was with me but a practitioner, as it happened so quickly that no one else had arrived. It was a quiet, orderly experience, and a beautiful demonstration of the power of Truth to annul false laws.
My son has always had Christian Science help, and such diseases as measles, whooping cough, and fever have been healed so quickly that we scarcely realized they had been problems. When he was four years old a very heavy stone fell on him and injured his leg, but we relied wholly on Christian Science and in three weeks he walked with perfect freedom. I have been healed of acute indigestion, frequent colds and sore throat, severe headaches, influenza, and a condition of deafness in one ear. On one occasion when tobogganing I crashed into a tree with terrific force, receiving the blow on my knee. It seemed like a very serious injury, but I asked for help in Christian Science and clung steadfastly to what I knew about God's presence and power and my oneness with God. In a few weeks I was completely healed. During the working out of this problem I did not miss any time from my work as Reading Room librarian, although I had to use a cane for a few days to assist me in walking.
