Bright Reflection
On page 4 of "Pulpit and Press" Mrs. Eddy has written: "A dewdrop reflects the sun. Each of Christ's little ones reflects the infinite One." What does it mean to be a reflection? Let us think of a bright summer morning, soon after the sun has risen, when there is dew upon all the grass and hedges and flowers. Each little dewdrop seems to dance and sparkle as if it were full of golden light. But there is no light at all in the dewdrop, for if the great golden sun were not in the sky, each little dewdrop would be just a plain, ordinary drop of colorless water.
It is just like that with man. God is the Father and Mother Mind, which fills all space and knows all that there is; and man is God's child, reflecting all that is in God. As the dewdrop reflects the golden light of the sun, showing its beauty to all who pass, so man shows forth God's goodness, and love, and power; and by man Mrs. Eddy means the real, true, spiritual selfhood of every man and woman and child.
Why is a little dewdrop able to reflect the sun? Because it is a drop of clean water. If it were muddy it could not throw back the sun's golden brightness, and nobody would see any beauty in it. So, to reflect God, we must have clean, clear thoughts. God's beautiful ideas cannot be expressed through thoughts of selfishness, or unkindness, or disobedience. We must think good or Godlike thoughts, truthful thoughts, loving thoughts, pure thoughts. We know that if we planted daffodil bulbs in our garden, we should get daffodils and not thistles. So, if we think good and beautiful thoughts, given to us by God, then all that we say and do will be good and beautiful, exactly like our thoughts.
