True Sportsmanship

SOMETIMES an erroneous idea creeps into the thought of boys and girls in that because Christian Science is a religion, they fear it may rob them of innocent fun and enjoyment if it is taken up whole-heartedly. But this is not so. The truth is that Christian Science enhances, increases, our pleasure in innocent games and sport; for, if Science be correctly applied and lived, it takes away only that which is evil, such as envy, jealousy, and rivalry. And all will admit that it is these destructive elements which decrease our joy in anything.

Perhaps many of us have passed through times when we seemed to get no satisfaction or enjoyment from our games. Perhaps if we have honestly thought the matter over, we have found it was because our thoughts were erroneous. It is our thoughts that make or mar our games and our pleasures.

Now, to be a true sportsman is no doubt an ambition many of us have. And indeed, when true sportsmanship is correctly defined, the ambition is laudable and worthy, because some of the essential qualities of a true sportsman are honor, good will, unselfishness, appreciation of merit, thoughtfulness, consideration of the feeling and comfort of others, courtesy, willing compliance with rules, "playing the game," as the saying is. Christian Science inculcates all this, and much more. By following its teachings and daily practicing them in our homes, in our schools, and at our work, we can confidently and joyfully demonstrate them on the sports field and elsewhere. Moreover, what a difference it makes to ourselves and those around us when our thoughts are filled with loving-kindness and goodness! The young Scientist, loving and practicing what he learns about Christian Science, has valuable contributions to make to the sports field. By the application of God's unfailing law of good, he can add greatly to the harmony, the joy, and the happiness of games, and also of his comrades in the playground.
