"Longevity is increasing and the power of sin diminishing,...
"Longevity is increasing and the power of sin diminishing, for the world feels the alterative effect of truth through every pore" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, pp. 223, 224). Our family has had two very definite examples of life prolonged through "the alterative effect of truth" as revealed by Christian Science. My father was healed of Bright's disease after specialists had given him but two months to live. This healing was accomplished entirely by absent treatment, the practitioner residing some seven hundred miles away. A quarter of a century has thus been added to his life, bringing blessing to him and to his family. Although this healing seemed miraculous to us, we did not become students of Christian Science until death again knocked at our door.
In 1910, while attending the University of Oregon, I was stricken with typhoid fever. I was taken to a hospital where I had the care of a physician, a day nurse, and a night nurse. Despite their faithful efforts I grew worse. Pneumonia developed, and the physician finally gave up hope of my recovery. He told my father I was dying and would be gone in two hours. Since the doctor could do no more for me, and since there was an epidemic of typhoid in the town, he left my case in charge of the nurse and went where he could be of help. At this juncture my father decided to turn again to Christian Science, which had done so much for him several years before. He asked treatment from a local practitioner, and when he returned to the hospital the nurse said I seemed to be rallying. The next morning the doctor was surprised to find me living, and without a symptom of pneumonia. As soon as I could be moved from the hospital I was taken to my home in Portland. I had been in the hospital two and a half months, most of the time unconscious, and was very weak and wasted; but with the help of Christian Science alone I rapidly regained health and strength. Since that healing I have used no material remedies, and have experienced better health and more freedom from fear than I ever thought possible while depending on drugs and hygiene.
The years that have been added to my life have been abundantly blessed. Membership in The Mother Church and in a branch church, class instruction, happiness in my married life, and many healings of sickness and of sin, are a few of the things that have been "added unto" me since Christian Science has taught me, to some degree, how to avail myself of God's goodness.
