A second article on the subject of Christian Science appears...

Carlisle Journal

A second article on the subject of Christian Science appears in your issue of June 19, in which many statements need correction.

Our critic is mistaken in thinking that Christian Science holds up the medical profession to ridicule and condemnation. Most Christian Scientists have tried medical means before adopting Christian Science, and they have found the latter much more efficacious. Why, then, should they adhere to that which they have proved ineffectual? The great difference between Christian Science and other forms of healing is that Christian Science is purely spiritual in its ministration. Christian Scientists take Christ Jesus as the Way-shower from the discords of sin and disease to health and harmony, and they naturally adopt his method. He said, "If cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto you."

Christian Science is not "suggestion," as our critic supposes. It heals through the spiritual understanding of the facts of being, which destroy the erroneous beliefs in the human mind of the patient. Our critic objects to the payment of Christian Science practitioners, because their treatment takes the form of prayer. Now, he has been a clergyman, and he naturally received a salary. Was he not paid for praying for his congregation? Jesus said, "The labourer is worthy of his hire." Christian Science practitioners give their whole life to the healing of the sick and the reforming of the sinner. They are doing a very honorable work, and certainly they are entitled to compensation. Did not Paul ask, "If we have sown unto you spiritual things, is it a great thing if we shall reap your carnal things?"
