There is no record in the four Gospels or in the Acts of the Apostles of any rite or ceremony as preceding or accompanying the healing of the sick.

The method employed by Christian Scientists is a purely spiritual one, for it is useless to attempt to combine the methods of Spirit and matter, since these are opposed to one another. The healing is wrought by the application of spiritual law, and is founded on the recognition of God as the unchanging Principle of the universe, as all-inclusive Love, and of His tender relationship to all that He has created. The Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, begins with the following statement (p. 1): "The prayer that reforms the sinner and heals the sick is an absolute faith that all things are possible to God,—a spiritual understanding of Him, an unselfed love." In proportion, therefore, as the practitioner grows in grace does he become a better healer; and a patient is not only healed bodily but improved morally and spiritually, for he is being gradually transformed by the renewing of the mind, as Paul says.

The fact of the unreality of matter, which was proclaimed by Mrs. Eddy over sixty years ago, can no longer be regarded as a fantastical belief, since some of the world's eminent astronomers and physicists seem to be independently approaching the same conclusion.
