During all my girlhood I had been predisposed to tuberculosis
During all my girlhood I had been predisposed to tuberculosis. At the age of nineteen, after a fall on the ice, I became a hopeless invalid, lying in gypsum, with tuberculosis of the vertebrae. Most of my nights were spent without sleep. Once during a hard, sleepless night I asked myself why I lived; for what purpose was my past life, with its defeats and victories? I did not believe in God. Despite our remoteness from the civilized world, the answer came in two days.
A friend of one of my relatives came to us for one or two days. This day had begun terribly, proving the prediction of the doctors that the vertebrae were being destroyed (verified by radio-photography). The doctors had said that under the best conditions I could live three years. My mother had been quite discouraged, and said so to our guest. To the astonishment of my mother, our friend replied that all was not so terrible, and that my mother must have hope. Later she spoke to me about Christian Science; and in five days I was healed, without special treatment, without knowing well any language except Russian, and only by reading the Bible and trying to read the French translation of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. The healing was so complete that the day I left my gypsum bed, after five months of staying there, I did not feel any weakness or vertigo. It was a great miracle to all those around me. The love of God is wonderful, indeed. Since then six years have passed without a day spent in bed.
After my healing I went to Geneva, where I had the privilege of attending the Christian Science Sunday School for six months. I have also gone through class, and become a member of The Mother Church. I know now for what I live, and I am deeply thankful to God for all His blessings. Serving in the work of Christian Science, I bow before the wonderful wisdom of God expressed by our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, in givings us the Manual and The Mother Church. Blessed is she for all her gifts to the world!
