In the Manual of The Mother Church, Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, says (Art. VIII, Sect. 24), "Testimony in regard to the healing of the sick is highly important;" and she adds, "This testimony, however, shall not include a description of symptoms or of suffering, though the generic name of the disease may be indicated." I want to take this opportunity to give my testimony of the healing efficacy of Christian Science, and to tell of some of the many blessings it has brought to me in the last twenty years.
From early childhood I, like the woman mentioned in the Bible, "suffered many things of many physicians, . . . and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse." As the result of the third major surgical operation I was left with a hernia which continued to grow larger, and it became necessary for me to wear a specially made support. This afforded relief for a short time only, and I soon reached the stage where in desperation I again appealed to the doctors, who very lovingly informed me that if I would consent to a fourth operation there might be a healing for me; but they could give me no assurance to this effect.
I then turned to Christian Science. I frankly told the practitioner that I had no confidence in it and was trying it only as a last resort. I related to him the many things I had been through in the way of physical suffering and surgical operations, and also informed him that the doctors had told me that, as a result of the last one, I should never have a natural movement of the bowels. He replied that all things are possible with God, and that no doctor had ever operated or could ever operate on the man God made. He then stated that it would be necessary for me to rely absolutely on God, which I promised to do; and I kept my promise. Treatment was begun; and after the first treatment I slept all night, my first night's rest in months. For three days there was no movement of the bowels, but I had no fear. On the evening of the third day they moved naturally, and they have continued to function normally since that time. After three months' treatment I suddenly realized that the hernia had disappeared; I took off the support and have never worn it again.
