From 1914 I was under arms
From 1914 I was under arms. In the year 1916 I was sent to a hospital in such a condition that the doctors doubted my recovery. For more than a year I lay in the hospital; and after my discharge from the army in 1917, because of the war injury— a severe lung trouble, complicated by chronic laryngeal catarrh and a nervous complaint —I was continually under medical care and often incapable of work. Somewhat later I also had great business difficulties to overcome, which pressed me to the limit of my endurance; and I was so overwhelmed that three times a week, on an average, I had to have medical help, until I was led to Christian Science.
In the year 1919, through friends, I heard of Christian Science for the first time. Here I must say that my first visit to a Wednesday evening testimony meeting made a peculiar impression on me. Both my wife and I felt we had to criticize these meetings; but the next Wednesday evening we were there again! In the years since, there have been very few Wednesday evening meetings and Sunday services which we have missed. After we had visited some of the Christian Science services the aforementioned friends introduced us to a practitioner. The practitioner had much opposition to overcome in my case before I grasped something of this splendid teaching. Slowly but surely what this teaching meant became clear to me. Consequently, things were becoming slowly better with me. For some years now I have been entirely well, and I can truly say that I feel better to-day than I did before the war.
Since my first treatment I have never again engaged medical aid. I thank God with my whole heart that He led me to Christian Science. Both my wife and I have great reason to thank God and our faithful Leader, Mrs. Eddy. We are grateful also for help in financial need, and for the proof of the ever-presence of infinite Love at the time of the birth of our child, who, thanks to Christian Science care, has developed into a splendid lad. In addition, we have had an endless number of blessings and healings both great and small through Christian Science, so that I cannot express in words the gratitude I feel.
