I took up Christian Science just before going into the...
I took up Christian Science just before going into the army, and in one week's treatment was healed of catarrh, stomach trouble, and bowel trouble. Later on, I was healed of the smoking and drinking habits, both of which had been with me for some time. Two years ago I was healed of a very bad throat condition when visiting a Christian Science Reading Room; and more recently I was liberated from influenza.
It would take pages to tell of the protection I had while in active service in the army. However, I should like to mention one experience. One night fourteen of us were sent out on advance detail duty, and when we neared a wood the sergeant in charge gave orders for us to keep about three feet apart. Just as we had separated at that distance, two shells were fired, killing one man and wounding five others. I volunteered to stay with the wounded men while another man went back for a stretcher. Just as he returned the barrage began, and as a result we were caught between our own barrage and that of the enemy. We both got into a shell hole. The shells were falling close and fast, and the machinegun bullets were coming down like rain. But I can say truthfully that I felt safe in that little hole, knowing that God was right there. The other man was afraid, and twice tried to get out; but each time he made a move he was shot through his pack. I know that divine Love protected us. I was just a young student in Science at that time, but I remembered much that I had read in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and tried hard to put into practice every word of truth that I knew.
Some time ago I met an old friend, and after he had talked to me for some time, he asked what I had been doing, for I seemed so different from what I had been when he had known me years before. I am very grateful for all the problems I have had, for they have made me work just a little harder. I am grateful for all that Christian Science has done for me. I am also grateful for church membership, and for class instruction from a loyal teacher of Christian Science.—Bernard W. Ulrich, Minneapolis, Minnesota.
