When, many years ago, I heard about Christian Science...
When, many years ago, I heard about Christian Science for the first time, I had treatment occasionally for weak or oversensitive nerves. A perusal of the first chapter of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, entitled "prayer," convinced me that Christian Science is the truth. The words "God is Love. Can we ask Him to be more?" (p. 2) responded to my deepest longing, for lack of understanding of God, good, seemed to be at the root of my trouble. The many differing opinions about good had disturbed my mental balance more and more.
Yet for many years it seemed impossible for me to make an earnest study of Christian Science, and so I did not feel the joyous security of standing on the rock. However, the little understanding I had of "a perfect Principle and idea,—perfect God and perfect man,—as the basis of thought and demonstration" (Science and Health, p. 259), was enough to heal me of the greatest of my fears.
Later on I recognized that Christian Science indeed is a Science, and therefore has to be studied. On page 495 of Science and Health we read, "Study thoroughly the letter and imbibe the spirit." This study I undertook with the loving help of a Christian Scientist. Thus the facts of being were unfolding and I was growing in strength and understanding and became as one newborn. At present I know myself more and more as God's perfect, peaceful, and happy child.
