Christian Science was presented to me some seventeen...
Christian Science was presented to me some seventeen years ago. At that time our home was under a great shadow. We were obsessed by the belief of reality in sin, disease, and death; doubt and fear were constant companions, and all because we had a wrong concept of God, in spite of the fact that my husband had been a local preacher for twenty years and that we had both been active workers in an orthodox denomination for many years.
"Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy is indeed a "key" to the Scriptures. It gave me a compassionate Father-Mother God, and when I realized that sin, sickness, and death are no part of God's creation, we had beautiful demonstration in the home. We have proved the healing power of Truth, and seen many discordant conditions vanish, some through help lovingly given by practitioners, others through my own understanding. Croup, mumps, inflammation of the eyes, stoppage of the bowels, sprained ankles, internal misplacement, and scalds have all been healed instantaneously. We have proved that the truth is indeed "sweet at its first taste" (Science and Health, p. 559). Other conditions, such as hereditary beliefs, physical weaknesses, and unlovely phases of disposition have been longer in yielding, compelling me to "approach nearer and nearer to this divine Principle," and to "eat the divine body of this Principle,—thus partaking of the nature, or primal elements, of Truth and Love" (ibid.).
Here I had to go through the wilderness. Many valuable lessons were learned; much fear was eliminated; doubt and belief largely gave place to faith and understanding; and a clearer perception of God and man in His image and likeness was gained. During this period the teachings of Christian Science were particularly helpful when a loved one passed on. The healing of sorrow with its sense of separation was very beautiful. It was as if a voice said, "Emmanuel, ... God with us." The presence of divine Love was felt in the home. Some little time afterward another member of the family was instantaneously healed, when seemingly beyond human aid through an attack of syncope. With this healing many false theological beliefs were destroyed.
