There appeared recently in your paper a letter by a minister on "Divine Healing." In this letter he said, "Divine healing is as far from Christian Science, as the East is from the West, in that it upholds the efficacy of the shed blood of Christ and the power of God as a separate act from any merit or act of man." This same writer also makes the following assertion: "A few years ago in the leading churches, dating from the revival of 1875, this country was astir with belief and practice of divine healing." Permit me to make the following statement as to Christian Science to your readers.

It was in the year 1866 that Mrs. Eddy discovered, as she states in her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 107), "the Christ Science or divine laws of Life, Truth, and Love" and named her discovery Christian Science. In the year 1875 she published the first edition of her textbook.

In this book, Mrs. Eddy states (p. 259), "The Christlike understanding of scientific being and divine healing includes a perfect Principle and idea,—perfect God and perfect man,—as the basis of thought and demonstration." Jesus required of his followers that they should be perfect even as God is perfect (Matt. 5:48). He himself demonstrated the way for all mankind to follow. Jesus also made it clear that before one could be healed, his thought must be receptive and prepared, through repentance and obedience, to meet God's requirements.
