In the year 1917 I was stationed at Camp Devens, Massachusetts, in the army service. One afternoon in the fall I was approached by a gentleman who asked if I would care to receive a free subscription to The Christian Science Monitor. I knew nothing of the paper, but accepted it because it was free; and, strange to say, I was the only one in the barracks of two hundred and fifty men to get this paper. I read several articles on the rear pages and my curiosity was aroused to the extent that I hoped to receive a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy; but did not then believe it was worth three dollars. While on board ship I voiced, within me, this hope; and we know that "thoughts unspoken are not unknown to the divine Mind," as Mrs. Eddy tells us on page 1 of Science and Health.

It was some time after reaching France that I began to receive copies of the Monitor, which were then more than welcome; but this continued only a short time, for I was transferred from one place to another so often that I failed to receive any more. After the armistice we were stationed in the Argonne sector in billets that had been formerly occupied by the Germans. We had been without literature and stationery for some time. On my way, with a buddy, to a Y. M. C. A. hut that had just been opened about five miles distant, I remarked that I wished I could find some book, for I did want something to read. It was a miserable, cold, rainy day, as we plodded along through mud and water; and lo! just before the entrance to the town I noticed, a little off the road, a book that was water-soaked and covered with mud. How great was my astonishment when I found it to be a copy of Science and Health! Little did I realize then what this book had in store for me. I handled it very carefully until we reached our billet. There I placed the book on a Y-shaped stick, which I stuck into the ground near the stove, to dry, and requested the other boys not to touch it. It was there for about three days. I believe had it been some other book it would have been disturbed; I know now it was protected for me. From that day I have had a different aspect on life, and I treasure this book very highly.

I was an inveterate smoker for years. This habit has been destroyed. We have received many other blessings in our home through the study of Christian Science. I am grateful for membership in a branch church and for the privilege of work that has been accorded to me. We have two children in our home who attend the Christian Science Sunday School, and who have never known anything but Christian Science in solving their problems.
