In 1866, as the result of a healing from the effects of a fall, Mrs. Eddy was led to a true understanding of the Bible in relation to the healing of disease, and from that time until 1875, when she copyrighted the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," her life was devoted to study and to proving the truth of her discovery. Regarding this period, Sibyl Wilbur in her biography of Mrs. Eddy says: "If any one reading this life thinks this great work was accomplished easily, or that when she said the book was given to her as a revelation, she meant that a personal Deity literally guided her hand across the pages, framing the words for her, let him consider the ceaseless mental toil and spiritual application stretching between the miraculous recovery in 1866 and the publication of her book in 1875" (p. 200).
Christian Science received statutory recognition in this country on December 22, 1927, on the enactment of the Nursing Homes Registration Bill, in which provision is made for the exemption of all Christian Science nursing houses from medical supervision. It is interesting to recall the fact that during the debates on this bill the Minister of Health, who was not a Christian Scientist, said: "Christian Science is not carried on as medical treatment; it is not a species of quackery which pretends to be something it is not. You may agree, or you may not agree with it, but there is no pretense that such treatment that is given by Christian Scientists is offered as an alternative to medical treatment, or as a variety of medical treatment."
Christian Science is simply primitive Christianity, and it is based on an understanding of the teaching and works of Christ Jesus.
