[Written for the Sentinel]

Freedom

No shackles can be placed on graces of the mind,
Nor fetters ever bind an action that is kind.
The vision that would soar above the mists of sense
Can rise to Truth, and rest within omnipotence:
True thought can master be of untoward circumstance
And dare beyond the bounds imposed by ignorance.
The beauty that is born of holiness and light
Can radiantly walk untouched by thrall or blight;
And joy can wing its way, enraptured, calm, and free,
And faith can find the balm of healing ministry.
The patience that would bloom into love's perfect flower,
And courage and content know no enchaining power;
And honesty and strength and sweet humility,
And purity and hope can ne'er imprisoned be.
The gentleness and peace, the meekness that would draw
All men unto the Christ, 'gainst such there is no law;
For as the sun is free to shed its light abroad,
So man is free to love and to reflect his God.
