Spiritual Rest

As Christian Science is understood and practiced, not only does healing result, but restfulness is experienced. Enquire of the Christian Scientist and usually he will tell you that whereas before knowing of this Science he was ill at ease and restless, heavy-laden and weary, now he enjoys a repose of body and mind he had never thought possible in former days. And he will say also that although inharmonious conditions still arise to be overcome, with the solving of them through an understanding of spiritual Truth rest and peace return.

In thinking of how to overcome weariness and fatigue, the question arises, What causes these? The answer is, Material-mindedness. The belief that matter is real; the belief that we are governed by material law and that this so-called law limits our activities even when they are good; the belief that when we devote ourselves assiduously to any task over a prolonged period of time, even though it be a worthy task, fatigue is bound to follow—all such beliefs ultimate in weariness and dispeace. As long as matter is believed to be real and we make it the basis of our thinking, fatigue and unrest will be our experience. How, then, are we to liberate ourselves from materiality?

Christ Jesus knew the solution of the problem: he knew that men could become spiritually-minded. When our thoughts turn to the Master, we think of one who, through constant communion with God, the Father, had attained to a great measure of spiritual understanding. What was the result? A composure which has never been equaled. Witness his bearing before Pilate in the judgment hall before he was condemned to crucifixion! And his sense of rest Jesus desired to share with all mankind. "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest," he said. "Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls." Meekness and lowliness of heart, the result of spiritual understanding—to possess these is to enter into the rest which the Saviour desired all men to enjoy.
