It is now twenty-six years since I was healed of what was...
It is now twenty-six years since I was healed of what was called consumption of the bowels and lungs, diabetes, and sciatica, solely through reading the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, our revered Leader, for whose indomitable courage and loving, persistent labors for mankind I am sincerely grateful.
When the physicians who attended me declared that I would never be better physically, I decided to try a change of climate, and removed to the southern part of Iowa. The change did not prove of any benefit, and the course seemed to continue downward, not only physically, but financially and mentally as well. With the depletion of financial resources came discouragement and fear for the future welfare of my wife and family of five little ones, the eldest being about twelve years of age. In addition to all this was the dread of being picked up on the street with a small flask of brandy in my pocket, which I believed I had to carry to ward off a chill or heart attack, the doctor having said I was liable to have such at any time.
Before taking the trip which I thought would bring me to where I would find health and peace of mind, Christian Science was offered to me, but I rejected the offer, saying, "I have no use for that stuff." But after I had traveled about two thousand miles and found that change of air had nothing to give me, a friend in another state suggested that I take up the study of Christian Science. At first I made the same reply, that I did not have any use for it; but after thinking the matter over, in spite of my antipathy towards the name, and the fact that a woman was at the head of the movement, I decided to read something about it. The light broke in upon my consciousness through reading a couple of copies of the Christian Science Sentinel, which convinced me that I had found something that I really had a lot of use for. After reading these I was quite ready for more, but nothing had been told me of a practitioner. Through the kindness of a friend I obtained a copy of the textbook which she had borrowed for me from the public library. I devoted every spare moment to the reading of this wonderful book, and soon recognized that the truth contained therein was indeed "the bread of life" for which I had hungered for many years. In less than three months I was a new man, and my daily prayer is one of gratitude to God for His revelation of this great truth to our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, one who was spiritually prepared to receive it and in turn to give it to humanity at a time when there seemed to be a spiritual "famine in the land."
