The Master

It was Jesus' recognition of his divine sonship, his understanding that man is born, "not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God," that gave him his power. It was the Christ which Jesus manifested that made him the master Metaphysician; that enabled him to heal the sick, raise the dead to life, feed the multitude, and be immediately at the place where he desired to be. Acknowledging neither time nor distance as real, he knew that Truth, not matter, was substance, and so was never limited by the so-called laws of matter.

Material thought, deceived by and accepting the false theory that man is "conceived in sin and brought forth in iniquity" and is "of few days, and full of trouble," is full of fear, and starts out with the proposition that man is born to die; that he is under the rule of pain, disease, lack, sorrow, and failure. But in its first chapter the Bible tells us that man was made to have dominion; and over and over again in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy emphasizes this fact. On page 393 she writes: "Exercise this God-given authority. Take possession of your body, and govern its feeling and action;" and on page 403 she says, "You command the situation if you understand that mortal existence is a state of self-deception and not the truth of being." Note the word "command"! It was his understanding of spiritual man's dominion that made Jesus the Master in all situations.

Mind's mastery of the body is acquired as we surrender our belief in the reality of matter. One can be a law unto one's self only as one follows Jesus' example, puts all things under the feet of spiritual understanding, and is subject alone to his Maker. One wins spiritual victory not by running away from discordant situations, ignoring them, or covering them, but by facing them and realizing harmony.
