From Doubt to Understanding

There lives more faith in honest doubt,
Believe me, than in half the creeds.

Thus writes Tennyson in his "In Memoriam." Only those classed among honest doubters can know the torment of the questioning, critical mind, to which faith seems an alien attribute. Such individuals may long to know what is true about life and the universe, but they find a flaw in every argument and remain mentally restless and unsatisfied. To such thinkers Christian Science brings the assurance of attaining to a definite understanding of Truth, an understanding which, as Mrs. Eddy tells us on page 330 of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," "supersedes mere belief." Naturally those are greatly helped who come to Christian Science already believing in God, already accepting the Bible as containing His Word, on which one may safely build. "Blessed are they," said Jesus, "that have not seen, and yet have believed;" but he did not withhold from the doubting Thomas the proof that his words were true. To those who are honestly seeking Truth, and yet find themselves unable to accept Biblical authority, Christian Science brings the assurance that each may prove the truth for himself scientifically, by demonstration.
