Peace

In the stress and turmoil of material living there are those to-day who long for something that will still the tempest of human doubts and fears, quell the raging sea of ambition and rivalry, bring harmony into families divided by selfishness and misunderstanding, and establish a better understanding between employer and employees.

Near the close of his earthly career Jesus, in a series of intimate, inspiring talks which we find in John's Gospel, prepared his disciples for the events which were to follow. Here we find the sublime promise: "These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world." Before this, he told them in a simple way of his unity with the Father, of their oneness with God, of the Father's love and care for them, and of the Comforter which would come, bringing to their remembrance all things which he had told them; and he spoke of the rich legacy he was leaving them: "Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid." This was the peace of God which was to sustain him through all the succeeding trials, even that of death itself, peace which so filled his consciousness that "when he was reviled," he "reviled not again."

Christian Scientists are gaining a better understanding of this Christlike peace through the study of the writings of Mary Baker Eddy, God's revelator to this age of the truth about God and man, the truth which Jesus taught and demonstrated. It is our duty and privilege as Christian Scientists to reflect this spiritual peace at all times and under all circumstances. At one time Jesus sent forth a group of his followers to preach the gospel, heal the sick, cast out devils, and raise the dead; and his injunction to them was: "And when ye come into an house, salute it. And if the house be worthy, let your peace come upon it: but if it be not worthy, let your peace return to you."
