I am indeed grateful for the peace and comfort Christian Science has brought into my life and for the protection I have experienced through the daily study and application of its teachings.

I shall never forget my first demonstration, the healing of chronic sick headaches, to which I was subject. While I had been healed of many physical ailments simply by reading the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, I felt I should be very happy if I could make just one demonstration and overcome some ailment through my own efforts. The opportunity came when I felt an attack of headache coming on. I had planned to attend for the first time a Christian Science Wednesday evening testimony meeting. I went, and enjoyed the service very much, especially the thought that healing was accomplished through prayer. On going home I decided to try Christian Science and not take the medicine which I always kept on hand and took regularly to avoid these attacks. I began to pray as I had always heard others pray, by begging and pleading with God to heal me; and the longer I prayed and pleaded the worse became the headache, until the mental picture of the after effects from these attacks, usually lasting two or three days, was too much for me. I decided I had better take the medicine and wait until I understood more about Christian Science. When I went to get the medicine the box was empty. I looked for something else to take, but there was no remedy in the house, so I again tried to pray. I began by recalling some of the things I had read about prayer in Science and Health, and then I recalled the quotations from the Bible on the first page of the chapter on Prayer, one of which reads in part, "Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them." I also recalled what James said: "Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts."

Then I realized that I had not been asking alright or I should certainly have received; for Mrs. Eddy says on this same page of Science and Health, "Desire is prayer." Of course I wanted my healing, and I felt it was not asking amiss to ask for it; but I found, in pondering the Bible citations, that I had something else to do. When praying, I must first believe that I would receive; then I must have faith and not doubt in my heart.
