Point Grey News-Gazette

My attention has been called to some remarks relative to Christian Science made by a doctor in his "Health Review" column of your issue dated June 19.

Many readers of your paper noted and appreciated the tribute paid by the doctor to Mrs. Eddy and her teachings, when he said: "I want to say here that of all the schools of healing, the human race is more indebted and should give sincere thanks to Mrs. Eddy's for banishing in her followers, and many who are not her followers, all fear of disease. That alone is the greatest advance that the human race has made in ridding itself of disease."

After paying the above tribute to Christian Science, it seems rather inconsistent to say that Christian Science fails in that it does not attack the cause of disease. The simplest deduction from the previous statement would be that Christian Science recognizes fear to be one of the principal causes of disease. The manner in which Christian Science goes to the root of disease is stated on pages 410 and 411 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, in these words: "Christian scientific practice begins with Christ's keynote of harmony, 'Be not afraid!' Said Job: 'The thing which I greatly feared is come upon me.'" "The procuring cause and foundation of all sickness is fear, ignorance, or sin."
