Signs of the Times

[Editorial in The Christian Science Monitor, Boston, Massachusetts]

President Hoover, in his recent radio talk, touched upon a point that must have found a response in the hearts of countless numbers of his hearers, when he said that he was in receipt daily of evidence of almost universal prayer that the negotiations started by him some time ago to reduce and limit navel arms shall succeed. Far more than is commonly acknowledged, prayer is recognized by the world in general as a potent force, if not the most potent force, in operation to-day, making for harmony among mankind.

James Montgomery, about a century ago, penned some lines that have reached many a heart which had begun to lose its faith in a too stereotyped form of worship, when he wrote his hymn commencing with the couplet,
