Place and Opportunity for What?
With mankind so largely concerned in seeking place and opportunity,—a place to work, a place to live, an opportunity to achieve or to advance,—it is helpful to analyze the situation in order to see clearly what it is for which we are seeking place and opportunity. If it be for the expression of the attributes or ideas of God, we need have no fear of lack or limitation: God cares for His own. The very least of His spiritual ideas carries with it, as an inherent part of its nature, the power of expression.
Even the materialist may be willing to admit that there is always place and opportunity for industry, honesty, loyalty, orderliness, unselfishness, alertness, humility, intelligence, courage, kindliness, good humor. How firm, then, should be the conviction, the assurance, of the Christian Scientist, knowing as he does that all spiritual qualities are of God, that they belong to all of God's children by reflection, and that they always possess vitality and activity.
On the other hand, Mrs. Eddy tells us in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (pp. 232, 233), "There is neither place nor opportunity in Science for error of any sort." This is readily appreciable; and when applied to human affairs, it is easily understandable that if error has neither place nor opportunity in Truth, in Science, it is useless to strive to manifest a place for it in experience. Any success that error in any of its manifestations may seem to have is illusionary, temporal, and never satisfying. We need expect no true success, then, if we are seeking place or opportunity for a false sense of self, filled or contaminated with self-pity, self-love, self-aggrandizement, pride of family, intellect, or education; or are manifesting indifference, apathy, indolence, fear, disobedience, insubordination, discontent, ill humor, intolerance. Paul has said that "the carnal mind is enmity against God," against the good He bestows, against health, happiness prosperity, success.
