Out of Prison

Isaiah prophesied regarding Christ Jesus that he would come "to open the blind eyes, to bring out the prisoners from the prison, and them that sit in darkness out of the prison house." Of the Messiah, Mrs. Eddy writes, "Nameless woe, everlasting victories, are the blood, the vital currents of Christ Jesus' life, purchasing the freedom of mortals from sin and death" (No and Yes, p. 34). His freedom from evil and his great love and compassion, reflected from divine Love, God, enabled the Master to liberate those who sought his aid.

Mankind needs enlightenment on the question both of freedom and of bondage. Many people fancy that because they are at liberty to choose their place of abode, map out their day, and select their companions, they are enjoying freedom. Yet in so far as they are controlled by idle self-gratification, headlong ambition, fretful haste, or temperamental whims, they are the slaves of their personal senses. So in due course their faith in matter is apt to turn to fear of matter, and false pleasures may at any moment be metamorphosed into physical or mental suffering. Thus are mortals imprisoned by their own cherished beliefs.

In order to gain true freedom, each one must learn to obey God, divine Principle, and must subordinate the human to the divine, for this alone leads one out of the prison house of materiality with all its restrictions.
