Christian Science was first effectively brought to my attention...

Christian Science was first effectively brought to my attention in 1913. At that time I was a slave to the tobacco habit and a frequent visitor at the saloon; and for years I had thought it necessary to take medicine before retiring, to avoid severe sick headaches the next day. I had also experienced business failure and the loss of dear ones, and the whole world seemed dark and dreary to me. My first healing through Christian Science was of rheumatism. I was relieved so quickly that I became much interested in the healing and asked the practitioner to explain how it was accomplished. She gave me some literature, which I read but did not seem to understand. The fact remained that I had been made well, not by medicine but by Christian Science. This kindled within me a keen desire to learn more about a church organization which claimed to repeat the works of Christ Jesus.

On my first visit to a Christian Science church, I was amazed at the beauty and simplicity of the entire service. The testimonies of healing seemed greatest of all to me. Men and women from all walks of life testified to the healing which I supposed impossible in these days. That was enough. There was no more doubt in my mind from that night on. I decided then and there that Christian Science was the religion for me. I immediately purchased a copy of Science and Health and read it every spare moment. I also became a regular attender at the Christian Science services, and found that I had discovered an entirely new world of thought.

I soon found what Mrs. Eddy had to say about tobacco. For more than fifteen years I had used tobacco, and the habit had such a hold upon me that I craved it incessantly. I was told that my poor health was caused by its use, and believed that to be true. I wanted to be free from the habit and tried every known remedy, but without success. Finally, after learning about Christian Science, I called on a practitioner for help and to my great surprise was instantly healed. That was thirteen years ago, and I have not had the slightest desire for tobacco since. Only those who have been released from such slavery can appreciate how happy I was to be made free.
