The Lectures

Introductions to Lectures

Hull, England (First Church).

Lecturer: John W. Doorly; introduced by Dane R. J. Huckvale, who said:—

It is a little curious that humanity does not more clearly recognize the existence of a power of which evidence is apparent on every hand. We see life manifesting itself in multifarious forms. We see mankind adapting in a more and more wonderful way the resources which lie around, and making strenuous efforts for the improvement of all human conditions, indicating clearly that all human life has a steady impulse toward something better. What this power is and how it is manifested is clearly shown in Christian Science.

Everyone is entitled to ask, If this power for good is an actuality, is it available for me? Can it help me? I will give a personal experience which answers this question. Many years ago I was seized with an internal complaint recognized by the medical profession as of an obstinate and sometimes incurable nature. During a number of years I tried many remedies and treatments without any permanent benefit until at last I abandoned all hope of cure and decided to carry on and make the best of it. For some years this state persisted, and then I was led to take an interest in Christian Science, solely on the intellectual side; but after reading for a short time the question struck me, If Christian Science does what it claims to do, why should it not heal me? It did! In less than a month the disease vanished, and I knew beyond doubt that Christian Science reveals the truth which is always available to heal and liberate.

Everett, Washington (First Church).

Lecturer: Charles I. Ohrenstein; introduced by Miss Cora Densmore, who said:—

Christian Science teaches that God, divine Mind, is the only power, and that man is the idea of that Mind. As such, man is subject, always and only, to the law of Mind; and when in true meekness we submit false human will and egotism to the influence of Mind, we experience the wisdom, power, and intelligence of God. This meekness or humility displaces self-depreciation or egotism. It gives us the spiritual dominion which is man's birthright. It teaches us that Mind, God, has power over every form of error, and that man, as the expression of that Mind, manifests health, harmony, and immortality. This thinking, with its resultant living, cannot fail to increase longevity. In fact, in the fifty-four years since the textbook of Christian Science, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, was first given to the world, longevity has greatly increased.

Jerome, Arizona (Society).

Lecturer: Robert Stanley Ross; introduced by Mrs. Evelyn B. Chandler, who said:—

Pilate asked, "What is truth?" and all down the centuries since this question has been asked, and is still being asked. I asked it when a semi-invalid; and the Christ, Truth, as found in Christian Science, made me free. Since then this truth has healed our family of many things, rheumatism, stomach trouble of long standing, and ptomaine poisoning; and has brought the peace that "passeth all understanding." Mrs. Eddy has said in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (Pref., p. viii), "The question, What is Truth, is answered by demonstration,—by healing both disease and sin."
