One New Year's Eve, with an earnest desire to be shown...
One New Year's Eve, with an earnest desire to be shown the right way to learn of God, I repeated our Lord's Prayer for the first time in many years. During that time I had not attended church services, and often said that I no longer believed the Bible as I had been taught it. A few months before this I had an attack of appendicitis and was advised by a doctor to have an operation as the only means of relief. I had begun to doubt the healing ability of materia medica or surgery, but because of the need of help of some kind, I tried a course of Viavi treatments. Physical culture and dieting were also tried; but I was no better.
Shortly after New Year's Day a friend lent me the textbook. "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and told me it would explain the Bible. With only the thought of understanding the Bible I eagerly began to read this book. The reading of two or three chapters had not been completed when the pain in my side and all fear of another attack of appendicitis left me, never to return. Constipation, which had troubled me for years, was overcome; and I ate what I wished, with no ill results. The understanding of an infinitely loving Father-Mother God which began to unfold to us dispelled completely the sense of sorrow and separation which my mother and I had felt over the passing on of a dear one. Indeed, we are most grateful for this healing.
Other members of the family became interested after my healings, and because they saw the changes which were occurring, as unlovely traits of character began to disappear. Fear for others was overcome when I understood that God lovingly protects and governs all His children.
