For three or four years prior to the summer of 1918, I was indeed miserable. During the early part of that summer I was unconsciously praying for the truth; I knew there was a better way, and prayed to know it. In the latter part of August of that year I was taken suddenly ill with what the doctor pronounced cholera and gastritis, and I was seriously ill for five days. On the fourth day I asked for a Christian Science practitioner, but no attention was paid to that request. The fifth day a lady came to see me who had been healed two years previously through Christian Science. I asked her to call a practitioner for me, and she did so. The practitioner came about four o'clock and stayed with me a short time. She told me to eat whatever I wanted. (I had not been able to retain anything during these five days, not even the medicine.) I sat up for an hour and a half and ate bacon. I was instantaneously healed, and lived in the atmosphere of Spirit for about three months; but I had to come down and work my way out of material, man-made beliefs. This first healing has always been a help to me in the working out of the problems that have presented themselves. We have experienced healings from attending the church services, reading the literature, and attending lectures.

One of our boys had a running sore on one of his feet for several months. We had worked patiently for this and had work done; but it did not seem to yield. There was to be a lecture in a city about thirty miles from our home. The boy did not want to attend, but on being told he might receive a healing he consented to go. He was on his foot all day until midnight, and when he took his shoe off his foot was healed, without even a scar. On another occasion the youngest boy had a running sore on one of his feet. He came down one morning crying and afraid, as it looked very much as if blood poisoning were setting in. He asked me to send for help; but I told him to go upstairs and read until noon, and then I would ask for help if it was not better. He read from "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy for about three hours, in which time he was entirely healed. These are just a very small part of the healings and proofs we have had of the power of Truth to destroy all so-called forms of error. And words can never express my gratitude for this wonderful truth.
