The copyright of the current edition of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy was issued by the Register of Copyrights in Washington and endures until 1934. It will then be renewed according to law for a period of twenty-eight years longer.
In addition to the copyrighted contents of the book itself is the protection the textbook has in the registration of the Cross and Crown emblem, which is embossed in gold on the front cover of all of our Leader's writings. This emblem is protected by the laws which deal with trade-marks, in one hundred and eighteen countries and governments, in every part of the world. It is registered in Europe in thirty-one countries, from Iceland to Gibraltar; in Asia in nineteen countries, from Manchuria to Cyprus; in Africa twenty-six governments, from Egypt to Rhodesia, have given us protection through our emblem. As much can also be said for Australia, New Zealand, and the Fiji Islands. In the West Indies fifteen countries, from Bermuda to the Virgin Islands, have recorded our trade-mark; in South America thirteen states, from Panama to the Argentine; while the six states of Central America have given us adequate protection in this manner. Every state in the United States, as well as Hawaii, has granted us immunity from unfair competition, as have also Canada, Mexico, and Newfoundland.
Besides the protection afforded by the copyright is the outstanding fact that Christian Scientists uniformly buy their books from their own Publishing House and their own Reading Rooms. As our people are by far the largest buyers of authorized Christian Science literature, there would be little inducement for a non-Scientist publisher to print Science and Health, even though it were not protected by copyright. Competition with The Christian Science Publishing Society for supplying Christian Scientists with their own literature would not be a promising prospect, sentimentally or commercially. Copyright or no copyright, Christian Scientists will always continue to purchase their literature at the places and under the conditions provided by the wise and comprehensive plans instituted by Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer of Christian Science and the Founder of the movement.
