A few years ago, while I was in a state of suffering, this statement was voiced to me by a relative of my husband: "Christian Science teaches that Mind governs the body." That was all I remembered of the conversation, but it never left me. A few years after this I came into contact with a student of Christian Science each day for several months; and many and varied were the questions I asked. They were answered honestly and truthfully. The seed of truth was sown, and the soil of material thinking had been stirred. I wanted the truth, but I did not know it. I had been a church member for a number of years, had heard sermons preached against Christian Science, and had been led to believe Christian Scientists did not use the Bible; so I thought I never could accept Christian Science, for I loved the Bible, even though I did not understand it.
While visiting my sisters in a small town in western Kansas, before joining my husband, who was employed in the shipyards on the west coast, I met a lady who was a student of Christian Science and whom I admired very much. One day while visiting her I made the remark that Christian Scientists did not use the Bible in their study. She kindly informed me they did, and that it was the same Bible which I used. Then she showed me the worn copy she herself was using. This was done so lovingly that I saw clearly I had been misinformed. This gave me something more to think of; and I must have looked as if I were favorably impressed, for she gave me some Sentinels to read, and afterwards the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I began to read and think. It sounded so beautiful that I felt it must be the truth; so I kept on reading. I had been taught in my childhood that there is a God and that He would answer prayer if we asked Him in the right way. I had had many prayers answered through this faith; but when our minister, whom we respected and loved, said God had taken our only child, my faith in God was sadly shaken.
I had never been strong, and this cup of bitterness seemed almost too much for me. The suffering was terrible, and it never ceased until I received my healing through the teachings of Christian Science. The first time I read Science and Health my healing began. I read on page 502 these words: "There is but one creator and one creation." I saw that if all creation is spiritual and there is only one creation, then there is not a material creator or creation. I saw clearly also that God is both Father and Mother. This understanding brought such peace and happiness that other physical ailments, such as sick headache, extreme nervousness, and constipation, which had tormented me for several years, gave place to health. These healings gave me such wonderful proof of the power of God that my great desire was to understand more of Christian Science and be able to help others as I had been helped. I am grateful now to be of service to the Cause of Christian Science in this way.
