Extracts from Reports of Christian Science Committees on Publication for the Year Ended September 30, 1928

Great Britain and Ireland.

Following the passing of the Nursing Home Registration Act, The Christian Science Board of Directors appointed the Committee on Christian Science Houses, consisting of three persons, of whom the District Manager is one, to cooperate with the Minister of Health in carrying out Section 7 of the Act which provides for the exemption of Christian Science Houses from its scope. In May, at the request of the editor of the Outline, an article on Christian Science was contributed and duly published. Later, a letter was received from a man living in Burma who, through reading the article, became interested in Christian Science, and wrote asking where he could procure a copy of our textbook.

It is interesting to note that many religious writers and thinkers are in agreement that there is to-day one common foe, the spirit of materialism. For instance, Dr. Temple, the new Archbishop of York, speaking of the deep struggle that he sees going on in the minds of men, said, "It is not a contest between East and West, but everywhere it is a great contest between those who have been molded by the faith enshrined in the Bible, and those who have not. There was," he said, "no rival faith. But there is a powerful, insidious, and omnipresent opponent, materialism." This explains in part one phase of the attacks which have been made on our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, on our church, and on the teachings of Christian Science during the past year. These attacks have come from people who cannot apprehend Mrs. Eddy's life nor understand the spiritual teachings of the religion she founded, and who consequently would adulterate Christian Science with materialism.
