Albertan
In the Albertan recently there appeared an advertisement containing these words: "Man Is Never Sick; Sickness Is Not Real: Who Said This?" These statements, detached from their context, are made in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. The complete statements, however, need to be presented in order to do justice to Christian Science and its Discoverer and Founder. On page 393 of Science and Health we read, "Man is never sick, for Mind is not sick and matter cannot be." Man referred to here is the image and likeness of God, divine Mind. This man is thus referred to in Genesis: "And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion. ... And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good." It is plain that the real, spiritual man, who is the exact expression of the divine Mind, is never sick. This makes it clear that mortals need to be freed from sickness as well as from sin; and the success attending the work of Christian Science proves the value of Mrs. Eddy's teaching on this vital subject.
Mrs. Eddy further writes in the paragraph quoted from above: "It is well to be calm in sickness; to be hopeful is still better; but to understand that sickness is not real and that Truth can destroy its seeming reality, is best of all, for this understanding is the universal and perfect remedy." The wisdom of these words is being more widely recognized and acknowledged as time goes on.
One must first of all acquaint himself with the facts of Christian Science and understand what it teaches, in order to deal adequately and fairly with the subject of Christian Science. This is especially necessary and desirable before one makes public statements regarding it.
