I had always been a student of the Bible and knew the letter of it, but not the spirit. Often did I ponder the text, "Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; ... for my yoke is easy, and my burden is light." It did not seem easy or pleasant to be a Christian, as it seemed impossible for me to live as I thought a Christian should. I attended church services very conscientiously, but discord was always present. Then I married and made a great failure of trying to be a Christian wife. Our babies came, and the eldest little girl had spinal trouble. A dear Christian Scientist wanted me to study Science in order to help her, but I said, "I never could believe in anything like that, and it would be only a mockery." We had already lost our second little girl, six months old; and then when six years of age this one left us. We were very bitter, and blamed God for all our troubles. In later years, too, we had domestic troubles.

Then one day while waiting for a train with nothing to do, I picked up a copy of the Christian Science Sentinel and read a testimony: the case was a facsimile of my own. I visited a cousin of my husband, and told her all my troubles. She was a Christian Scientist. She talked very kindly to me and told me what a help Christian Science had been to her. When I returned to my home town I went to a practitioner. She spoke so nicely, and took my case. I wanted to buy "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and she said, "Yes, by all means buy it." In less than a week I heard from my husband and went to him. My friends did all in their power to keep me from going, but I went. All our differences were settled, our home was reestablished, and became more harmonious than it had ever been. My husband attended the Christian Science church with me, and instead of continually doctoring we now depend on Christian Science. Formerly when we went on our trips I always carried medicine; now I carry my Science and Health.

One healing stands out as a great landmark to me. I had been alone all day, my husband being at work. About four o'clock I was taken violently ill with all the symptoms of ptomaine poisoning. The evening work had to be done, the feeding and caring for about fifteen head of stock and preparing the evening meal. It was in December, and my husband would not be home until half past six. I went out trying to know the nothingness of all discord. My faithful dog went with me; and several times I was so ill that I lay down on the ground, he watching over me. Although young in Science, I had no desire to call for medical help. When my husband came home, he read to me from Science and Health. We were over two miles from a telephone and the only practitioner we knew was one hundred miles away; so I said, "We must conquer with God to guide." About two o'clock in the morning I got relief and went to sleep. The next morning I was up and attended to my regular work, all discord having disappeared.
